Every morning you pray for him. At the coffee maker, at the door, at night when the house is quiet and he's somewhere you can't see. You've bought him something to carry that prayer, more than once. The book helps you pray, but it stays by your coffee cup. And the pieces you sent with him never made it past the season.

It was never your prayer that fell short. It was what you sent it on: elastic, plating, a flat disc nobody can read. So we made the piece the prayer deserves.
"Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen." Rome, 1886. Pope Leo XIII ordered this prayer said at the end of every Low Mass, the priest and the people kneeling together. For generations, every parish said it aloud before going home; your grandmother may have known it by heart. Many parishes say it after Mass again today. The medal carries it in four words, around the rim.
Pray it once for him, slowly. Then look at his medal: every figure on it is a line of that prayer, and the rim says it short.
Sources: the prayers Leo XIII ordered after Low Mass in 1886 (Aleteia, 2017; the Catholic Herald); Daniel 10:13 and 12:1, Jude 9, Revelation 12:7-9; the English text as said in US parishes. Every word on his card and his medal is checked against them.

A round St Michael medal in 316L stainless steel, polished, in gold or silver, the legend struck around the rim: one size, 32 mm across (1.25 in), 46 mm tall with the bail, 21 g, on a 3 mm box chain, 24 in (60 cm).
Big enough to read across a table, a little bigger than a half-dollar, and flat enough to sit under a uniform shirt and a vest. On the 24 in chain it sits on a man's chest under his collar, and lower on a woman, below the collarbone, under a sweater or over it.
Not sure what to say? Say this: "Father, would you bless this medal for my son? I'd like a blessing of this St Michael medal if you have a minute." It's printed on his prayer card too.

“Sacramentals… always include a prayer.”Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1668
“Wearing charms is also reprehensible.”Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2117
“You received without pay, give without pay.”Matthew 10:8, quoted by the Catechism, 2121, on why no blessing is ever sold
If your sister says only Jesus saves, she's right, and you can tell her so: "I'm not asking the medal for anything. I'm asking Jesus, and the saint prays with me. Praying for him and praying to a necklace are two different things."
It adds nothing God was missing. It doesn't work on its own, and we'll never tell you it does. It's your prayer made visible, a reminder he carries, and a reason to say it again every time you picture it on him.

The woman who answers every email at Oremus
My son Daniel is twenty-six. He works on wind farms three states away, and most days I don't know which county he's in. For years I prayed for him at the door and sent the prayer with whatever I could find: a "To My Son" bracelet that broke before spring, a medal from the big online store that was a black disc. I wanted something of my prayer to go where I can't, on a piece that lasts and that he can actually read. That's Oremus. I read the first name on every order, and I pray for those names on Sunday. When you write to us, it's me who writes back.
Monica, at Oremus

I gave it to him in the kitchen at five in the morning. He didn't say much. He wears it under the vest now, and twice he's driven back for it.
Alicia, Columbus OH · for her husband, a sheriff's deputy

Father blessed it on Sunday. The night before he shipped, we sat in the car and I read the prayer off my phone. He put the medal in his pocket and went inside.
Beth, Omaha NE · for her son, 18

He wears the gold and I wear the silver, the same medal. When he's on nights, I hold mine at the sink and say the prayer for him.
Diane, Bakersfield CA · for her husband and herself

The last one I bought ran it all together. My son caught it before I did. This one he read out loud, rim and all.
Elaine, Springfield MO · for her son, 24

He told me St Michael is in his Bible too. He took the medal without a word and wore it on patrol the next day.
Frances, Chattanooga TN · for her son-in-law, a state trooper

Bought them for my son leaving for Parris Island and for his mother, gold for him, silver for her. His is just right. The 24 in chain hangs low on her, so she wears it under her sweater; I'd have liked a shorter one for her. Four stars for that.
Craig, Clarksville TN · for his son, 18, and his wife
